About This Spot

Stepping into Tsuruya feels like entering a warmly bustling nook where ramen takes center stage in all its comforting complexity. Nestled along the lively stretch of Shattuck Avenue in Berkeley, the restaurant hums with a spirited energy that mirrors the rhythm of the neighborhood itself. The pace here isn’t hurried; it invites you to settle in, soak up the atmosphere, and savor the unfolding flavors with a quiet anticipation that builds gently as the fragrant broth simmers.

The space carries an unpretentious vibe — a mix of focused attention on each bowl and the natural buzz of communal dining. While the cozy seating spills slightly into a tidy alleyway, it’s this blend of intimacy and urban edge that crafts an authentic local experience. It’s a place where wait times linger just long enough to remind you that truly good ramen demands patience, and where the warmth of the kitchen spills over into the room.

What makes Tsuruya stand out is not just the range of ramen bases — from rich tonkotsu to delicate tori paitan — but the thoughtful care behind each offering. Whether you’re drawn to the deep umami of their spicy tonkotsu or the gentle lift of the vegetarian ramen, every bowl carries a comforting depth that’s perfect on a crisp Berkeley evening. The noodles, offered in different textures and cuts, complement the broth with a satisfying chew, creating a layered, memorable meal. Beyond ramen, small bites such as crispy chicken karaage or chow-worthy croquettes add playful contrasts, while simple desserts like yuzu sorbet offer a refreshing finish that feels just right.

Tsuruya cultivates a lively, approachable dining experience where the emphasis falls squarely on connection — between flavors, people, and the shared enjoyment of food. It’s not a quiet retreat, but rather a place that invites conversation amid the clatter of bowls, the murmur of orders, and the steady warmth of broth in every cup. For those who cherish nuanced tastes wrapped in a neighborhood setting, Tsuruya offers a space to discover a few new favorites and perhaps, like many locals, a ramen spot that feels a little like home.

A bit of a wait to get a table, but it was well worth it! Vegetarian ramen was excellent. I’m less of a fan of the matcha panna cotta, but it was still yummy.

Ramen quality deserved 5 stars. Atmosphere and Service - so so and there’s room for improvement. First, please do not make people wait outside a cold alley. Invert a tablet for people to put in their phone numbers for waitlist. So you can text when your table is ready for the party. Or pay a little bit for Yelp or Google to form your waitlist. Second, please use a QR code for customers to order food at the table. It’s fastest and it would not make any mistakes by the servers. Third, hire more servers as they’re already busy enough. If you claim you’re authentic Japanese Ramen, then do it more efficiently. You can turn your tables quicker that way. One last thing, ask to take out the red onion in your ramen. It doesn’t belong in tradition noodle soup.

Can't stop thinking about that vegetarian ramen I had. Added a medium amount of spicy paste to make it more flavorful but I think I might need to add a bit more next visit! The broth was the best part. Made me feel so warm inside. The yuzu sorbet was GREAT! loved.

They have 4 bases and one can choose between either pork (Tonkotsu) or chicken (Tori Paitan). They also have the option for vegetarian ramen, but this is limited each day. What's unique is that you can have either the regular Hakata, thin noodles, or the Sapporo, medium thick wavy noodles. You can't make reservations, but they have some seating in the clean alleyway where you can wait. Only downside was that it took over 25 minutes for our ramen to be served, but at least the owner came to our table and apologized for the delay.

Best ramen I’ve ever had. Broth was flavorful, the noodles were delicious, and the spice level was fantastic (I have an insanely high spice tolerance, so be aware before ordering). It was extremely lively, so if you’re looking for somewhere quiet—bring headphones. Quick customer service, they’re extremely attentive, and the owner was extremely kind. Will return.

Hidden in an alleyway is where you’ll find Tsuruya, this place offers high quality ramen, appetizers, and Sake. Service is amazing everyone working was nice and friendly, the atmosphere is cozy and intimate as seating is limited and close to one another. I highly recommend you try this spot if you are craving to try something new.

Ordered the deluxe chicken and pork ramen - both were really good! Prefer their thicker Sapporo noodles over the thin ones. The matcha panna cotta was super tasty too. Place is clean and the staff are friendly and quick!
